About Ian Dalton

Independent piano technician trained in traditional piano technology.

I am based in Kew and work with upright and grand pianos across Richmond, Kew, Twickenham, Chiswick, Barnes, and West London.

Technical care, independent judgement, and long-term perspective.

My work combines formal piano technical training, mechanical diagnosis, restoration experience, and practical advice about how an instrument should be maintained.

  • Trained at North Bennet Street School in Boston, a specialist craft school with a long piano technology tradition.
  • Experience with tuning, repair, assessment, touch, tone, and older quality instruments.
  • Independent advice for owners buying, maintaining, moving, or planning work on a piano.
  • Currently serving West London, including Richmond, Kew, Twickenham, Chiswick, and Barnes.

Training

Formal piano technology training at North Bennet Street School in Boston.

Assessment

A practical view of condition, touch, tone, stability, and maintenance priorities.

Care

Ongoing tuning and technical attention for upright and grand pianos.

The aim is to understand the piano and the person who plays it.

From a student upright to a carefully chosen grand, the work begins with the same question: what does this instrument need in order to serve the player well?
